Can Macular
Degeneration be prevented?
At present,
there is no known way to prevent the occurrence of Macular Degeneration.
Internationally, the RP movement funds research to find the cause,
prevention, treatment and cure for retinal degenerations, including Macular
Degeneration. There are many new therapies to treat to the “wet” form of Age
Related macular Degeneration [AMD] , These
include: ·
Photo
Dynamic therapy- which involves the use of a light sensitive drug and a cool
laser. ·
Anti-angionenic
drugs which are injected into the eye. ·
Other promising
areas of research that one day may offer preventative therapies include growth
factors etc. Please
consult your eye specialist to discuss treatment for your particular
condition. Dry AMD can sometimes convert to the more aggressive “wet” form. If
a sudden and dramatic change of vision occurs please see your eye specialist
immediately. All AMD patients should monitor their vision on a regular basis
with an amsler grid. An eye care professional can detect what is
going on in your retina by using special instruments and tests. If a close blood relative has been diagnosed
with Macular Degeneration or other retinal degenerative disease, it is
recommended that family members advise their personal eye care professional
of that diagnosis so that a more complete medical history can be maintained. |
