Besides gene therapy, how can the study of genetics contribute to the fight against Macular Degeneration?

Genetics, the study of genes and the inheritance of traits, offers real hope that someday at least some of the 3000 inherited diseases that affect millions worldwide may be prevented or controlled. This science offers opportunities toward understanding the multi-faceted nature of retinal degenerations by finding the genes that cause these diseases. Significant progress has already been made.

Once a defective gene is isolated, scientists can study how that gene functions when it is healthy. In some cases, identification of damaged genes has led to confirmation of underlying theories about retinal degenerations.

Advances in genetics have also improved diagnostic techniques, enabling couples to make informed decisions about starting a family and informing individuals about their risks of developing certain illnesses.
