How common is
AMD?
The AMD Alliance
International estimates the prevalence of AMD at 12.2% of people aged 55-64
years, 18,3% in the age group 65-74 years, and 29,7% in the age group 74 years
+. The World Health Organisation has elevated AMD to
the 3rd largest cause of vision loss WORLD WIDE and the single largest
cause of vision loss in the western world. As the population enjoys a longer life, the
number of those affected by AMD will increase as well. Although AMD
is more prevalent in the Caucasian population there is evidence that is increasing
in other population groups as well. Alarmingly it would also appear to be
occurring at a younger age. |
