What are the
chances that children or other family members of people with AMD will also be
affected?
The late
onset forms of Macular Degeneration are not known to be inherited in a
straightforward pattern such as autosomal dominant or recessive. However,
familial patters have been observed, indicating that inheritance is involved
to some extent. Some surveys have estimated that 15 to 20 percent of AMD
patients have one or more first-degree relatives who are also affected. AMD presents
a special challenge for genetic researchers because it is difficult to
determine the exact role of genetics when a disease occurs late in life.
Genetic research is a major emphasis of Retina International and a number of genes
associated with AMD have already been identified. From these and other studies, scientists
hope to learn more about the relationship between genes and Macular
Degeneration. Members of Retina South Africa will receive priority for
consideration in research projects. |
