Retina South  Africa funds a gene tracking project at the University of Cape Town. The project seeks to identify the genetic mutations (mistakes) responsible for genetic retinal conditions in South African families.

With the possible advent of gene based therapies in the not to distant future, it is imperative that all the genes involved in retinal degeneration be identified, only then can we participate in any therapies that might become available.

Many genes involved in various forms of retinal degeneration have already been identified. In addition a gene mutation has been linked to age related macular degeneration. With risk factors such as smoking, diet and prolonged exposure to sunlight, at risk family members could be identified and advised to avoid these risk factors.
