DOMINANT RP RESEARCH

In dominantly inherited RP, there are two copies of the gene, one bad and one good. An experimental form of gene therapy called Ribozyme Therapy is under investigation. In this type of therapy, instructions are sent to the photoreceptor cells to recognise the disease causing gene mutation. These instructions prevent the bad gene from producing the toxic protein which eventually destroys the photoreceptor cells. The good copy of the gene will then be able to produce the needed protein without interference. Using this technique, researchers have been able to save 80% of electro retinograph function in an animal model with a Dominant Rhodopsin mutation.
