RADICAL NEW OPERATION FOR AMD
Eye surgeons at Duke University, USA are experimenting with a new type of eye surgery for patients with Awet@ AMD. The operation is high risk and will only help AMD patients with a small area of haemorrhage. It involves removing the lens of the eye and detaching the entire retina, removing the vireos jelly, the white of the eye, removing undesirable new blood vessel growth, using laser therapy, rotating the retina to a new position and then reassembling the eye. Complications which can occur are distortion and double vision.
When successful, the operation has improved central vision quite remarkably. Source: Ocular Surgery News, December 1 1997.
